North End Classic

UPDATED Thursday February 9 @ 10am.

North End Trails. Cable, WI.

Discussion. The frigid overnight temps Tuesday through Thursday night should be enough to keep the snow-pack acting colder than the air temps throughout the weekend. My best-guess is that even if the thermometer hits 35-37F on Friday, the snow won't transform very much and waxing will be more similar to typical upper-twenties waxing than mid-thirties waxing.

Preceding Weather. After cold temps Wednesday and Thursday (lows around 0F, highs around 10F), Friday will be warmer (apx 35F). Overnight temp should drop to 21F on Friday night.

Race Day Weather. Start time temps around 25F topping out at 34F by the afternoon; but staying below freezing for the duration of the race.

Snow Conditions. Expect some transformed snow mixed with untransformed snow.

Glide Wax.

Base Wax. Start BWLF (Base Wax Low Fluoro) is perfect for this type of condition. Start LF8 Blue or SG8 Blue are good economy options.

Race Wax. Start HF6 Purple. MF6 or LF6 Purple would be good economy options.

Fluoro:  Start SFR60 powder or SFR99 block will be dynamite. If the snow does transform moderately on Friday and Saturday, Start SFR300 liquid could be a good option.

Kick Wax

Base Wax. Start Base, thin and ironed.

Main Wax. Start Synthetic Purple. If you typically need more kick, Oslo Purple would be a good choice.

Final Layer: FHF60 Red or RF Red hardwax, thin and lightly smoothed with the palm of your hand.

City of Lakes Loppet Freestyle

Updated Wed Feb 1 @ 9:45am

Theodore Wirth Park. Minneapolis, MN

Discussion

Right now we're waiting to see how much new snow will accumulate Saturday afternoon/evening; and what the grooming plans will be for mixing the new snow in with the old snow. If you had to wax skis now, our guess is the snow will act colder than the air temps indicate because it is forecast to be windy when the snow falls which dries the snow out. And the snowpack that is currently there is hard and abrasive. Both of these indicate using a colder wax than the air temp so we're focusing on the "blue" range of waxes. We will update again as we are able to test on Thursday and Friday; and when we get a better idea of the snow fall and grooming situation.

Preceding Weather. Highs around 20F, lows around 8F.

Race Day Weather. Start time temp should be around 22F for the Freestyle Marathon and 25F for the Puoli Loppet, topping out around 28F by the afternoon.

Base Wax. Start LF10 Green or Start SGG Graphite

Race Wax. HF8 Blue. Start MF8 or LF8 Blue would be good economic options.

City of Lakes Loppet Classic

Updated Thurs Feb 3 @ 11pm

Theodore Wirth Park. Minneapolis, MN

Discussion

Right now we're waiting to hear what the grooming plans will be for race-day. Kick wax testing on Wednesday indicated FHF Purple klister (without a cover) was good, but covering the klister with BM Fluor hard wax made the skis much faster without taking away from the kick. Oslo Blue (over Base Wax Extra) was also really good, but we only skied for about 4km so I'm not confident that would last for the full 30km distance. We will do more durability testing on Friday morning and we'll update the recommendation as soon as we're done testing around noon.

Preceding Weather. Highs around 20F, lows around 10F.

Race Day Weather. Start time temp should be around 18F for the Hoigaards Classic Marathon and 26F for the Puoli Loppet, topping out around 32F by the afternoon.

Snow Conditions. Expect highly-transformed, dirty granular snow.

Glide Wax.

Base Wax. Start BM6 Green. Start LF10 Green or Start SGG Graphite would be good economic options.

Race Wax. HF8 Blue. Start MF8 or LF8 Blue would be good economic options.

Fluoro: Start SFR60 purple powder. SFR99 block would be great economic option.

Kick Wax

Base Wax. Start Base Klister, thin and ironed.

Main Wax. Start FHF30 Purple Klister. Start Purple Klister may be another good choice.

Final Layer: Start BM Fluor kick wax or Start FHF60 Red kick wax.  Start RF Blue or Synthetic Purple may be another good choice.

Ishpeming to Marquette, MI

50k, 25k, 12k Classic and Skate Races

Preceding Weather. Highs in the upper 20s, lows around 20F, with a less than 3 inches of new snow predicted.

Race Day Weather. Start time temp should be around 20F and topping out around 27F by the afternoon. The current forecast is a for light snow during the race and the humidity will be high (80%+).

Snow Conditions. Expect highly-transformed granular snow mixed with some newer snow.

Notes on Recommendations:

We are currently recommending slightly different products for the long race and half (and short) races for 2 reasons. 1) The amount of old snow on the course is likely to be quite abrasive and 2) The half-distance race starts later and the temps will be warmer.

Glide Wax.

Base Wax. Start BM6 Green, Start LF10 Green or Start SGG Graphite

Race Wax.

50k Skiers. Start FHF6 Blue, HF8 Blue or MF8 Blue

25k Skiers. Start FHF4 Violet, HF6 Violet or MF6 Violet

Fluoro: Start SFR60 purple powder. SFR99 block would be a great economic option.

Top Coat. Start FHF11 block. SFR300 liquid would be a great economic option.

Kick Wax

Base Wax. Start Base Wax Extra, thin and ironed. (Start Violet Klister could be the choice if less snow falls than is forecast)

Main Wax. Start FHF Blue or RF Blue. Try Start FHF Red or RF Red if more kick is needed.  (Start Uni Wide Klister could be the choice if less snow falls than is forecast). Start Synthetic Blue, Synthetic Purple, Terva Blue and Terva Red could all be in the mixed depending on what the weather does in the next 3 days.

Skin Skis

Wipe skin with Fiberlene to clean most of the dirt. Apply Start Skin Grip and wipe clean with Fiberlene. Repeat until Fiberlene shows no more dirt.

Spray Start Fluoro Skin Grip on the skin.  This should be done on race morning.

For maximum speed, apply Start SFR300 liquid to skin about 15 minutes before the race start.
